Thursday, February 25, 2010. Montreal, Quebec, Canada - Vivo Musique Internationale is proud to announce that the Montreal based Dominican artist RAFAEL-‘Rafael & Energia Dominicana’ will perform at Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad, presented by Bell, as part of Whistler Live! 2010.

RAFAEL (Wilsikin Esteban Medina Arias) is a Montreal based singer-songwriter from Bani, Dominican Republic. Rafael is a performer of Dominican music (merengue and bachata) and a variety of Latin music genres. Rafael has been called a ‘tsunami of energy’ for his energetic dancing and vocal style.

Rafael is honoured to have this opportunity to participate at the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad. He is also proud to be accompanied in Whistler by a group of wonderful Montreal musicians that includes: the great artist Papo Ross, Musical Director/Saxophone; the internationally renowned Guitarist, Toto Laraque; and with Juan Romero/Bass; Peter Barzey/Percussion; and Joe Alexis Torres/Keyboards.

Rafael (Wilsikin Esteban Medina Arias) est un chanteur-compositeur-interprète originaire de Baní, République Dominicaine, et maintenant établi à Montréal. Rafael chante différents genres du répertoire de la musique latine, mais il est surtout connu dans le monde de la musique pour ses compositions et interprétations de merengue et de bachata- musiques provenant de la République Dominicaine. Rafael a été comparé à un ‘tsunami d'énergie’, pour son style de danse, sa voix et ses prestations énergiques.

Rafael est fier d’avoir l'honneur de participer à  l’Olympiade Culturelle de Vancouver 2010, et il est aussi fier d’être accompagné au Whistler par un groupe de merveilleux musiciens de Montréal, incluant: le grand artiste Papo Ross/Directeur Musical et Saxophone; Toto Laraque/Guitariste internationalement renommé; et avec Juan Romero/Basse, Peter Barzey/Percussion, et Joe Alexis Torres/Claviers.

LaSalle, le 24 novembre 2008 _ Le samedi 6 décembre, à 20 h, sur la scène du Théâtre du Grand Sault, le Centre Henri-Lemieux accueille Hilario Durán, l’un des chefs de file du jazz latin. Le grand pianiste et compositeur d’origine cubaine, qui réside aujourd’hui à Toronto, se produira en formule trio avec Roberto Occhipinti (contrebasse) et Mark Kelso (batterie), deux grandes pointures du jazz canadien. Il s’agit incontestablement d’un des temps forts de la saison 2008-2009 du TGS.

La feuille de route de Hilario Durán, qui a commencé sa carrière au milieu des années soixante-dix, est impressionnante. On le retrouve d’abord avec le Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna, où il se familiarise avec les ensembles de type big band et apprend l’orchestration. En 1981, il rejoint le groupe du fameux trompettiste Arturo Sandoval. Avec ce groupe, il participe à de nombreux festivals internationaux de jazz, dont celui de Montréal en 1987, et partage la scène avec des musiciens aussi célèbres que Dizzy Gillespie, Michel Legrand et Gonzalo Rubalcaba. En 1990, Sandoval fuit Cuba pour poursuivre sa carrière aux États-Unis. Hilario reprend alors la direction de l’ensemble qu’il rebaptise Perspectiva. Peu après, il rencontre la flûtiste canadienne Jane Bunnett, avec laquelle il collabore à de nombreux projets. De 1996 à 1999, Bunnett et son mari, Larry Cramer, produiront trois albums de Durán sur étiquette Justin Time.

En 1998, Hilario Durán s’établit définitivement à Toronto et fait peu à peu sa place sur la scène jazzistique canadienne. Leader de plusieurs ensembles, lauréat de nombreux prix prestigieux, dont deux JUNO et le Prix SOCAN du Compositeur de l’année aux National Jazz Awards 2008, il a enregistré trois albums sur étiquette Alma Records depuis 2004 : New Danzón (2004), Encuentro en La Habana (2005) et From the Heart (2006).

Hilario Durán is an internationally renowned and multi-award winning Toronto-Canada based Cuban pianist,

composer, arranger and educator. He started his career in Havana, Cuba, and garnered international acclaim during his years as the pianist-arranger for trumpeter Arturo Sandoval. He is a multiple Canadian

JUNO Award winner, GRAMMY Award nominee, SOCAN Composer of the Year, and recipient of a Latin Jazz USA Chico O’Farrill Lifetime Achievement Award, to same some of Hilario’s honours to date.

Hilario is an ALMA Records recording artist whose most recent release is the DVD “From The Heart” –the DVD of the Juno Award winning CD of the same name. Hilario’s 2001 recording of ‘Havana Remembered’ on the Solitudes record label was nominated for a Canadian Juno Award. Alain Brunet of La Presse in Montréal, said that “Hilario Durán is a monster of virtuosity”; and the great Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés said that “Hilario is one of the great Stone and Spin pianists of this 20th Century”.

Vendredi 19 septembre 2008– Toronto, Canada – Directement de Roumanie, le groupe blues Transylvanien NIGHTLOSERS fait son entrée au Canada avec une apparition à Montréal, Québec, le mardi 14 octobre 2008 à La Sala Rossa et ensuite à Toronto, Ontario vendredi le 17 octobre 2008 au Silver Dollar Room (voir la liste complète des spectacles plus bas).



Étirant les limites du blues et du R&B américain ainsi que de la musique roumaine de type folklorique et Gypsie, Les NIGHTLOSERS ont créés un des sons les plus originaux provenant de l’Europe de nos jours.



Formé en 1994 par le directeur de films et musicien Hanno Höfer à Cluj en Transylvanie, NIGHTLOSERS est un groupe Roumain de blues-ethno-rock fameux pour leur habilité à trouver des racines communes entre le blues américain, le country-rock irlandais et la musique folk authentique d’Europe de l’est. Leur son est une mixture bien mesurée de passion, d’ironie subtile ainsi que d’une expertise technique à la guitare électrique, le violon gypsy, l’harmonica et, en première mondiale, le premier vrai joueur professionnel de 'feuille' (comme un brin d’herbe) – le tout en amalgame avec une bonne dose de tempérament Transylvanien.


Le critique musical de The Independent On Line (Angleterre), Keith Chadwick, décrit la version de la chanson ‘Shame Shame Shame’ de Jimmy Reed interprétée par les NIGHTLOSERS,
»…… la chanson débute correctement avec un solo de guitare de type bottleneck digne de Muddy Waters, mais quand le groupe se rajoute il y a un violoniste jouant de la gigue, un banjo pinçant ses cordes ainsi qu’une basse et une batterie jouant un two-step de type country-mile. Sauvage ! Tout ça avant que le vocaliste commence. (Il avait une troupe de femmes vocalistes en arrière plan à la Bryan Ferry entonnant ‘Shame On You’ pour commencer). »

Le groupe NIGHTLOSERS est aussi connu pour ses trucs et acrobaties hors de l’ordinaire effectués au violon et à la guitare. Leurs spectacles incluent souvent un mélange de gymnastiques roumaines et de brandy aux prunes, le tout qui donne forme à ce qu’ils appellent « The Groove Distillery ». Les membres du groupe placent leurs instruments sur le dos, sur la nuque, ou encore les suspendent dans les airs tout en jouant comme si c’étais la chose la plus naturelle à faire.


Leurs performances surchargées de chansons classiques tels que 'Blue Suede Shoes', 'I Walk The Line' et 'Stormy Monday Blues' ont fait du groupe NIGHTLOSERS un favori des audiences roumaines et à travers le monde. Ce phénomène les a amenés à jouer dans les plus gros festivals de blues et de musique du monde d’Europe. Ils sont présentement à guichets fermés lors d’une tournée en Israël.

Friday, September 19, 2008 - Toronto, Canada - Direct from Romania, the Transylvanian blues band NIGHTLOSERS make their first-ever Canadian concert appearances in Montréal, Québec on Tuesday October 14, 2008 at La Sala Rossa, and in Toronto, Ontario on Friday October 17th, 2008 at the Silver Dollar Room. Stretching the limits of American blues, R&B, Romanian folk and traditional Gypsy music, Romania's NIGHTLOSERS have created one of the most original sounds from Europe today.

Formed in 1994 by film director & musician Hanno Höfer in Cluj, Transylvania, NIGHTLOSERS is a Romanian blues-ethno-rock band famed for their ability to find common roots between American blues, Irish country-rock, and authentic Eastern Europe folk music. Their sound is a well-measured blend of passion, subtle self-irony, and technical expertise on electric guitars, gypsy violin, harmonica, and the worlds first professional 'leaf' player (leaf as in blade of grass) - all packaged together with a good dose of Transylvanian temper.

The Independent On Line's (U.K.) music critic Keith Chadwick describes the NIGHTLOSERS version of Jimmy Reed's ‘Shame Shame Shame’.
”......it started fine, with solo bottleneck guitar worthy of Muddy Waters, but when the band came in there was a country fiddler playing jig patterns, a banjo plunking away and the bass and drums playing a country-mile two-step. Wild! And that was before the vocalist started (he had a troupe of backing female vocalists à la Bryan Ferry intoning "Shame On You" for a start).”

NIGHTLOSERS are also known for their unusual tricks and acrobatics performed on the violin and guitar. Their gigs often include a mix of Romanian gymnastics and plum brandy that gives form to what they call "The Groove Distillery". The members of the band place the instruments on the back, on the nape, or suspend them in the air while continuing to play as if it was be the most natural thing to do.

Their supercharged performances of classic songs such as 'Blue Suede Shoes', 'I Walk The Line' and 'Stormy Monday Blues' have made NIGHTLOSERS a favorite of Romanian audiences all over the world and has lead to their appearances at Europe's biggest blues and world music festivals. They are presently on a sold out tour of Israel.

Rafael continues his solo deput showcase appearances in Montreal with a set at The Palace.

RAFAEL: Concert-showcase de Rafael: Energia Dominicana. Rafael is a Montréal, Québec based singer-songwriter from the Dominican Republic. Rafael sings and writes songs in Spanish language- merengue, bachata, salsa, and tropical music.
Rafael is known in Montréal Latin music circles as one of the city’s top singers of the genres of music from the Dominican Republic. He is the former lead singer and one of the composers for the Montréal merengue group Estofa Band. Estofa Band performed in theatres, festivals and clubs in Montréal and Toronto, including opening for artists such as Latin Grammy award winning Aventura, Grupo Mania, and merenguero Tony Rosario. Rafael’s compositions and voice can be heard on EMI- Virgin recording artist, reggaetonero Papa A.P.’s compact disc Assesina- Rafael composed La Colegiala and Nena. Rafael has also written songs for Freddy Anthony, and El Lindo. Rafael has since embarked on his solo project which he will debut in a showcase format on September 13, 2008 at Montréal’s El Caballero Sports Club.

Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - (Wednesday, May 07, 2008) Cuban-Canadian pianist/ALMA Records recording artist Hilario Durán will lead the Hilario Durán Trio on a cross Canada tour, summer and fall of 2008. The Hilario Durán Trio will perform at this country’s major jazz festivals and venues from coast to coast. This is the debut national tour as a leader for Hilario Durán, a multi award winning and internationally acclaimed Cuban-Latin jazz pianist, composer, arranger, bandleader and educator.

The Hilario Durán Trio features the highly acclaimed Canadian musicians, contrabassist Roberto Occhipinti, and drummer Mark Kelso. Hilario describes the trio and the music: “This trio is one of my most expressive musical formations - classic Cuban and Latin jazz repertoire, a style of Cuban danzon with essential rhythms from Afro-Cuban music like cha-cha-cha, bembé, mambo, son Montuno and elements of modern jazz.”

Hilario Durán is based in Toronto, Canada. He was recently honoured with a 2007 Chico O’Farrill Lifetime Achievement Award from Latin Jazz USA, for his contributions to Latin jazz and Afro Cuban music. Hilario is a multi JUNO award recipient, Grammy nominee and multi National Jazz Award recipient. In addition to the Hilario Durán Trio, Hilario leads the 20-piece Hilario Durán & His Latin Jazz Big Band.

Montréal, Québec, CANADA - (mercredi, 7 mai 2008) - Le pianiste cubain-canadien Hilario Durán, sous étiquette ALMA Records, dirigera le Hilario Durán Trio lors d’une tournée pancanadienne au cours de l’été et de l’automne 2008. Le Hilario Durán Trio participera aux principaux festivals de jazz et évènements musicaux d’un océan à l’autre. Il s’agit d’une première tournée à titre de leader pour Hilario Duran, pianiste cubain- Latin jazz, détenteur de nombreux prix et acclamé internationalement. Il est aussi compositeur, arrangeur, chef d’orchestre et éducateur.
